OVERVIEW
To dismantle an existing product, a Lufkin 25 Yard tape measure, and build it from scratch in 3D CAD modelling software SolidWorks.
The task was primarily set to teach 3D surfacing skills as well as allow a brand identity to be applied to the tape measure casing via the application of a new decal design and colour way.
The casing was constructed of two parts that would be secured together via screws. One side of the basic shape was initially created then mirrored. Unique details for each part such as male and female joining features could then be added individually.
As well as the casing, all the inner components were also modelled, then assembled together to create the final product – as seen below in an exploded assemble view drawing.
